CONTEMPLATE MENTAL FEELINGS TO TRANSCEND MISERY

It is prudent to contemplate mental feelings to transcend misery. Our desire to establish an attachment to these feelings is the root cause of every misery. Whereas it is required that after contemplation of their true nature we accept these without any like or dislike.

MISERY IS A MENTAL FEELING

In our daily life, we may encounter the following eight kinds of mental feelings:-

  1. Gain And Loss.
  2. Honour And Dishonour.
  3. Happiness And Unhappiness.
  4. Praise And Blame.

The contemplation will help us to accept the outside things as the way these are rather than disliking that. Whenever we face unsatisfactory conditions we are accustomed to thinking that, Why is it like this? It should not be like this. With the right understanding, we would be able to accept the outside conditions as a witness only.

By nature, we can form a feeling of dissatisfaction out of any outside condition. Actually, the miseries arise due to our nature of grasping. The cultivation of mindfulness by meditation practice teaches us to remain detached towards the worldly conditions.

GAIN AND LOSS

All the human beings perform tasks such as business/profession/job to gain profit or earn some income. Whenever we earn money we feel delighted. Similarly, when we suffer loss,? we feel dissatisfied. Naturally, all of us aspire to gain rather than to suffer loss. Whereas, it is required that we accept both of these without any like or dislike. Both are part and parcel of our life. Sometimes we may gain, other time we may incur?a loss. There is no harm in undertaking a right analysis of our loss-making?activities. we shall pinpoint the wrong steps taken and make necessary amendments in our action plans to turn that profitable.

Formation of an attachment to the desire to gain something every time causes unsatisfactoriness. In the same way, our disinclination towards any loss will also add fuel to the fire of misery.

HONOR AND DISHONOR

Naturally, all of us aspire honor and respect in the society. Money, power, post, or fame represent and enhance the status of an individual. The honor gives delight whereas the dishonor increases dissatisfaction. No doubt, these external conditions are essential towards executing our duties efficiently. The real culprit to the feelings of misery is our desire to always receive honor only. We shall refrain from liking to the honor and disliking to the dishonor.
