SUFFERING IS BOTH FRIEND AND FOE OF HUMAN BEING

IT is a Universal Truth that the SUFFERING IS BOTH FRIEND AND FOE OF HUMAN BEING. We all experience suffering but lack its true understanding. The true understanding will certainly ensure its end.

ANALYSIS OF HUMAN MIND

In order to understand suffering, we ought to have an analysis of both suffering and pleasure. Both of these are mental feelings which arise from the establishment of sensual contact with outside objects. Our mental thought process evaluates it and develops an attachment either of clinging or of aversion. This phenomenon results in the formation of mental feelings of suffering or pleasure, as the case may be.

EXAMPLES

In my view it is prudent to discuss some of the examples of our daily chores, resulting in suffering.

1. In the morning when I woke up the bed tea was missing. On inquiry, my wife asked me to wait for some time. A mental feeling of frustration arose.

2. Yesterday I instructed the gardener to water the plants. Somehow he forgot. I shouted angrily at him.

3. Two friends went to a City Mall for shopping. One of them enjoyed whereas the other was irritated as the mall was full of visitors.

Likewise in our day?to day routine,?we encounter numerous bizarre incidents. It is quite natural that our mental thought process develops feelings of likes or dislikes towards them. As a result,?the clinging to liked one and aversion to the disliked is preferred.

TRUE UNDERSTANDING OF SUFFERING

Obviously, we would have to understand the true nature of our mental thought process. It is required that we observe and accept the external conditions in the way they are. By doing so the suffering would turn out to be our friend. Otherwise, it will be converted into a foe. Attachment to the desire of keeping the external conditions unchangeable will cause suffering as all are constantly changing.
